280SE engine

Hi I am new to this forum and classic Mercedes ownership, I have a 1966 250SE coupe bought as an unfinished project, it has a 280SE s.o.h.c engine engine number starts 130. This was fitted in the 70's and unfortunatley it is in unserviceable condition.

I have found another 280SE s.o.h.c engine for sale which is allegedly in good condition but it is no longer in a car and cannot be heard running, as I am unfamiliar with these engines is there anything I can check to help me decide wether to buy or not are there any obvious faults with this engine.

It is complete with mechanical fuel injection and some other ancillaries.

Thanks

RE: 280SE engine

They are notrious for head corrosion. You cannot buy new heads for 280SE's anymore and there are precious few places that still weld them. Also, the mechanical fuel injection will need work after sitting for so long. Your best bet maybe to to a megasquirt injection to the engine with a bettwer ignition system.
