Mercedes Benz S class on Top Gear:
I found the video that Jeremy Clarkson ruins the interior of a S280.

IMO it’s very silly of him destroying a fine masterpiece.

I like the way he said the interior of the new S class is pretty much the same to the W140. I wonder what will happen to the car? Salvage for parts perhaps?

This is an old review of the Mercedes Benz S class 600SEL in 1991 by Jeremy Clarkson.

This is the latest S class W221 review with the W140 alongside it. The W140 interior is destroyed

The pictures shown below are the early Mercedes Benz W140 S class prototype in the 80s.
Just look how they looked. The rear end looks at lot like the R129 SL in the early design stage.

The Mercedes Benz S class W140 series was unveiled at the March 1991 International Auto Show in Geneva, Switzerland. Mercedes Benz engineers have combined safety and high performance in their cars and the W140 is no exception. The W140 is the first sedan to be fitted with a V12 engine.

According to this site (http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Flats/2188/)

The new S-class (W 140) sales dropped dramatically in Germany in its early years of production due to its environmental unfriendliness. The cars were criticized as being unnecessarily bulk and heavy.
Despite its slab-sided look, the W 140 was mechanically sophisticated and a true engineers' masterpiece. The car was solid and impeccably built, and it was the last "over-engineered Mercedes" which no newer Mercedes including its replacement W 220 S-class could rival it (not even close) for build quality. “

“All models of W 140 received new model naming. For example, a 600SEL was relabelled as S600L, a 600SE was renamed as S600 and a 600SEC was thereafter coded as S600C. It marked the end of era of SE, SEL, and SEC model naming and best avoided the confusion of mixing future models with their predecessors. After then a W 140 500SE will be known as S500, which would not mix up with the W 126 500 SE.”

The Mercedes Benz W140 S class consists of different models. They have the same body but different engine type:

The Mercedes Benz 600SEL and S600:
This model uses the V12 engine M120
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_M120_engine

The Mercedes Benz S500 and 500SEL and S420:
This model uses the V8 M119 engine type:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_M119_engine

The Mercedes Benz S320 and 300SEL:
This model uses the straight 6 M104 engine type:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_M104_engine
The Mercedes Benz S280 also uses the same engine but has only 2.8 litres. Slightly underpowered compared to the S320 models.
The S350 Turbo diesel and 300SD uses the straight 6 engine but a different engine type that is the OM603 engine type. If anybody got info on this please sent me a PM!

The Mercedes Benz W140 series is a luxury sedan. It weighs 2 tons. It was produced from 1991-2000. The production number of W140 is 406,532.

The Mercedes Benz C140 coupe:

http://img279.imageshack.us/img279/2144/a91f18941ke.jpg
The coupe shares the same technology as the W140 sedan. The 2 doors coupe only comes with V8 and V12 engines. It was introduced in 1992 in Detroit motor show.

Yes there was a C140 with the smaller engine but not that common outside of Europe even here. The 500 and 600 were the only ones offered in the US where most of the information written in English comes from.

No, C140 came in 420, 500 and 600. No 6 - cylinder anywhere in the world.

Are you sure? I'm sure I've seen one unless it was a 420 and I didn't see the 4 right as it was driving past me.
