Transmission lifespan - 300SD?

What's the most one can expect from a 300SD transmission, assuming of course, all proper and timely maintenance was done?

A mechanic just told me 200k - to 250k tops. Hoping personal experiences are better...

Thanks.

Re: Transmission lifespan - 300SD?

That is a good estimate 200,000-250,000 miles. It depends on whether the miles were highway miles or city miles. I was able to get 225,000 before it started slipping. A used one can be 300-400 dollars, but the installation price is just the same---900 dollars! A Mercedes-Benz re-made one can be bought cheap now. They want to get rid of them. The tranny can go for another 200,000 if maintained properly, filters, fluid changes.

Woody.
There are so many variables to consider in the lifespan of anything.
Most comes down to maintenance, use and abuse.
Keep in mind the 80's Mercs were bought and owned by well off individuals who had multi vehicle stables and maintenance was only money.
Those people also had kids with less appreciation for the value of what they drove when daddy let them and abused a lot of what they got their hands on.
These older cars and trucks are always a gamble.
The g wagen odometers don't even count the hundreds of thousands of miles or KMs.
The speedo is also so easy to swap when the unit itself was readily available.
Your frustration to lack of answer to your question is understandable but I think the "no news is good news" applies.
If the transmissions in the SD's were known for low KM failure you would have got more response.
The fact that Mercedes is selling these transmissions cheap to unload tells me they were not a high demand replacement part.
It also seems to me they may even be strong enough to sub into a G if alternatives were zero.
