Now I do feel a lucky duck .... just bought an original one on ebay (includinfg the ski mountings....)   1999 Euro for the whole set .......

Hard to make out, but is that contraption actually designed to permit
the retractable roof to operate while it's still in place?

Now that's a good question. Will let you know as soon as it arrives in the next few days. 

It's not going to fit on my R230 without some major change since I don't have the prep for it on the outside of the A-Pillar.

PS: Ebay price was 199 Euro's
