| W123 300D [non turbo] - White/Blueish Smoke
I have had this W123 300D for quite some time now; there is however a problem that has been there since its procurement on which I would like your expert advice. There has always been a white/blueish smoke, emitted from the exhaust constantly upon firing up the engine. In the morning the smoke is thick and dense, but as soon as the engine warms up in around 15 mins the smoke is almost gone; later on, only slight quantities present upon revving up the engine.
Is this normal should the smoke be there? I have heard that diesels do have this problem and only if the smoke is black should one worry? Never experienced a diesel before but had this been a petrol then this would have been either a case of worn out rings in the engine or even probably a gasket issue - does the same theory apply to diesels as well?

If the smoke where black I would say that the engine is not burning all the diesel, so either the diesel-pump-delivery would be set to high or the engine was not fireing on all five cylinders.If the smoke where white and you could smell coolant in the exhaust you probably would need to check the head or the head casket.
I have had a few cars fitted with the OM617-engine and when the engine is cold smoke would occure at start-up in every one of them. Does the coolant or the oil level change? Many miles on the clock? These engines are known to run practicaly forever. I met a man whith an old GD300 in which he had changed the engine at a little more than 800,000kilometres. Now it has over 1,000,000km on the clock

In my experience, black smoke is usually too much fuel (too rich). White smoke upon start up, could be as Rossi stated coolant in combustion process or fuel that is not being ignited at all and exiting the tail pipe raw. Poor compression, one or more bad glow plugs, excessively tight valves etc. |

Blue smoke is whats more of a concern. Blueish smoke indicates oil....from stuck or worn oil control rings or valve seals. |
