I want to purchase a mercedes diesel...

I am looking for a used Mercedes diesel. I plan on using it for back and forth to work, and on a few roadtrips, probably from Santa Maria, CA to Vegas and back, or maybe a fun vacation..

I have decided a 240D is to underpowered based on a little research. I want a 80's 300SD, maybe late 70's.

So far I have found on craigslist near Santa Maria, CA:

87 300SDL - $2,700 - but from east coast, so there may be some rust issues...

1983 Bronze Mercedes 4 door Sedan Turbo Diesel (TD) 300 (I think that would be a 300 SDL as well?) $1,200

1978 300SD - $2,500 - odometer broken, but not concerned about that

1980 300 turbo diesel wagon $1,700.

I have not looked at any of them yet.

I know to check for, mnx records, blowby through oil cap, blue smoke, and rust. Also aware the odometer can quit in these but I found a fix...

What else should I be checking for?

DjM

I don't know where this east coast rust thing comes from (maybe northeast where salt is used on the roads). The south east should be fine.

Avoid the California 1985 models, as they have a trap oxidizer which can give you some problems.

1985 was the last year of the 617A (aspirated or turbo diesel).

Thanks,

I meant northeast like you mentioned. We used tons of salt on the roads there and it absolutely ate everything on our cars in upsate NY.

If I had to I can remove the trap oxidizer right?

Yes you can but there will need to be some crafty re-plumbing to make it work without restriction.

Thanks, I bought an 83 300 SD. So far so good. Except the glow plug relay blew Sunday evening.

Other than that, runs well, and I have mnx records back to 1994 with receipts and all.
