I am thinking about picking up a Mercedes 300gd in the future. I want one that has the 617 motor in it. Living in USA how had are these to find? What years came with that motor? Any information is appreciated.

This is the Non-Turbocharged engine. The most common upgrade was to replace it with the 617A (aspirated IE turbocharged) engine from the sedans of that era. 1982 -85: 300D, 300TD, 300CD, 1979-85 300SD. Pretty much a direct swap. From the factory the 300gd never had the 617A in it. They come up for sale on EBay every once in a while and check here for a site dedicated to G-wagons: http://www.clubgwagen.com/classifieds/ads.php Go here for a little more history: http://www.g4rce.net/engl/models.html Fill in your profile and peruse the G-wagon area for a lot of valuable information. The good thing though is the mid eighties Mercedes were well cared for by the real mechanics of that era. Gone are those days.
