One of the most important models?

Didn't one of the Mercedes designers (Bruno Sacco I think it was) say that the 190E was one of the most important Mercedes models to date? Who said it, if it was actually said in the first place?

I guess that's true, but what about the W124?

RE: One of the most important models?

Bruno did say it but did not elaborate as to why it was so important. Introduced in 1982 (the 124 was in 85) the 201 had newly developed suspension components and came with air bags and ABS, virtually not available in the 123. Smaller cars were also needed in the European market at the time.

In the US the 201 had a bit of a problem: “that’s a lot of money for a 4 cylinder car,” the saying went. It was tough going against the 6 cylinder three series cars. It was the last Mercedes to be introduced with a carburetor, the 124 was the first the come out only fuel injected.

No. It's still in the one's ,W124 whereas the 190 is in the two's,hence W201,a fresh new slate and way of thinking. If that makes any sense to you

I know this is old but just for the record. There was a W124 powered by a carburettor engine: the 200.
