If the engine oil does not meet the standards for your vehicle, engine damage is possible — which is not covered by the Mercedes-Benz New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Please choose your vehicle's Model Year from the list for detailed information on the proper fluids for use in your vehicle. What's "only" about it is that they're the only oils approved for the diesels. They can certainly be used in the gas cars, and many dealers will only have this one oil anyway. It's really irrelevant to include them on the 1999-2004 chart, as there aren't any diesels in this timeframe anyway, save for Sprinter Vans. In addition, 2005-2006 E320CDI are fine with 229.5 oil. BTW, with respect to the diesels requiring 229.51 oil, they feature a sticker under the hood cautioning not to add ANY quantity of noncomplying oil. Risk is poisoning the diesel particulate filter. My manual says other oils will damage the engine. I understand to use the specified filters but why not another high end synthetic oil that is not 229.5 or 229.51?

I think the .51 spec is for the newer diesels with a partical filter. Those oil companies have paid Daimler to list their oils as approved. Daimler is just supporting their paid suppliers.
