I seen that. BUT, it's going to be used to go after the used tire business. It's used tires that's kept Michelin Cross Terrains on my ML430 for the past 2.5 years. No problems with them.

ABC - a consumer's hazard

I agree it's good to be aware of the age of the tires one is buying in the interest of full disclosure.  But if someone wants to make some laws, they ought to make some laws against the kind of sensationalist paranoid jounalism practiced by ABC in that story.

Pictures of burned up cars with car seats and "little sneakers" followed on by separated tread along the highway, meant to make you think every separated tread you see on the highway is due to old tires that killed children, when 99.9% of them are re-treads from semis that enable you to buy groceries at reasonable prices.

Get in somebody's face when he says the "recomendation" you're citing has no data behind it, get on him when he says he doesn't know what the basis of the recommendation is, and yet offer no basis for using it yourself, when you're the one who brought it up in the first place.

Not one scrap of data offered anywhere in the entire story.  Even the opening guy with his sadly dead son said the tires were 4 years old when he bought them, so no problem by the proposed 6 year rule.

Again, know about what you're buying, no question.  Replace your tires on the basis of age as well as tread wear, no question.  Did ABC say anything about either of those good practices that might  help people do themselves some good?  No.  Never at any time do they offer anyone anything that could be considered as constructive help.  Just sensationalist reporting, tantamount to another E-mail spam whipping people up into thinking Fabreze is killing their pets.  What a crock.  ABC ought to be twice as ashamed of what they were doing in that story as any store manager selling old tires.

Just my opinion.

Separating thread is one story.

Age also has an impact on a tires winter driving properties.

A six year old tire can have loads of thread left, but the rubber will, if stored improperly, have hardened so you will have seriously degraded grip in the winter.

Where I live, the winter grip is not a concern; but the tread separation is. I just checked the Yokohama Geolandars I purchased a few months ago for the G500; and they were all made in the 27th week of 2007. Nice and fresh.

Also, storage conditions will affect the tires aging. If they are store inside in a cool, dark place they'll last much longer than if stored outside in the sunlight.

I noticed on the video that at the place where the guy bought his tires, they were stored outside, in the sun.

Thanks Dutch, I never knew how to tell how old a tire was..... I had a tread partially seperate on my old dodge a few years ago, the tire guy told me it happened because they were old. I remember thinking.....ok, they were old...but....what's considered old and how can you tell? However, I didn't give it much thought since, that is until I watched that clip. My geo's on my G are 2005 bought in 2006, my boat trailer tires are 2003, and my girlfriends car has 2000's with 80k kms (still lots of tread and they look fine). I won't let her drive it untill we get new tires on it....and check the date before buying them.

The rain tires NASCAR ran on last weekend in Canada were 6 years old.
