Retrofitting a COMAND

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum, but am finding it very useful for various upgrades which I am carrying out on my ML.

My next project is to fit a COMAND system to my pre facelift ML (the ones which came without the COMAND wiring). Has anyone done this? Does anyone have any pictures of the wiring ?

After searching the net I found a few sites dealing with this retrofit but am not too sure about cutting up any wires. One site has the following:

"Wiring converter.

You need to make a cable up that goes from the C connector on the vehicles wiring harness to the C1 and C2 connectors on COMAND.

I suggest that you start with the new C (203) / new CLK (209) loom (correct version for whether your car is left or right-hand-drive), and install that alongside the existing loom. The D2B wakeup (blue/black) interconnect will be in one of the wiring ducts by the front door sill (normally found by removing the door sill), and the CAN distributor in the same duct but in the foot-well. If you have a CD Changer in the trunk/boot, you will have some splicing to do as the CD power lead only reaches the glove-box. If not, put your CD changer in the glove-box."

Where it talks about the D2B Wakeup and the CAN bus distributor, Does anybody know which colours these wires are, exactly where they are and what they look like? The last thin I want to do is to cut the wrong wires?

Many thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

Vik.

Re: Retrofitting a COMAND

From my understanding you should have the command wiring as all the MB wiring harnesses are universal it's the same plug, even the W140 has it and I've seen it done on Benzworld. First thing would be to pull the exsisting radio to see just what is in the back of it.

RE: Retrofitting a COMAND

Hi
The COMAND wiring is different to the standard Audio wiring. The 'C' plug is replaced by C1 and C2 (much smaller plugs)

Theres an adapter available from www.comandonline.co.uk to make your life easy now

The problem on older ML is finding the speed signal - also, always use a COMAND with part number A163 820 xx xx - you need the A163 part, as its for the ML and it works with non interior-canbus cars like the ML

ps, the instructions you quote above are from my retrofit document at www.mercupgrades.com - but those are not the ML instructions, so don't use them! Start with the ML instructions and work with them instead.

Cheers

Richard

RE: Retrofitting a COMAND

If you have a MY98/99 you will need to do the speed signal retrofit as well.

http://www.whnet.com/4x4/vss.html

Check out wolfgang's site for some extra material......

I suggest using my DIY as it will make the mod a no-brainer.

http://www.whnet.com/4x4/radios.html

PS: I have also done the TV-Tuner, VES (Video Entertainment System), and Sony PS2 Playstation retrofit.

Here is the DIY for the Comand Retrofit to any ML

http://www.pointedthree.com/disc/forums/showthread.php?tid=262&posts=17&start=1

Just follow my retrofit in the DIY after doing the speed signal retrofit instructions from wolfgang's website.

Wow,

Thanks so much for that, will try to go through it as soon as it stops raining and get the COMAND fitted.

Many thanks again.
