Transmission Click Clack 300TD 1980

Hi. Trouble is this: 'Click and Clack' sound as gears are about to change between 2/3 (and to a lesser extent 3/4).
From two to half a dozen fast clacks. Only when cold. Sound goes away after a few gear changes.
Filter and fluid (both converter and pan) are new. No debris in pan. Fluid was clean. Fluid level is correct. No leaks.
Fluid used is Castrol Transmax M. There is slight flare between 3/4 but otherwise the transmission is fine.
Car is 300TD 1980 non turbo.
Any leads?

Cheers,
Mark

Was the small drain plug replaced in the converter when it was re-installed?

Yep. The level is good and stable.
I may have to bite the bullet and see the local Merc mechanic. It would be good to be
not completly clueless when I go in though.
