Motorola IHF 1000 UIM module installed on ashtray cover

I am in the process of installing the IHF 1000 kit into my 2005 E500. Actually, I am all but finished. The only step remaining is to attach the mute lead. I thought I would share the approach I used for installing the User Interface Module. I removed the ashtray cover, cut a hole in it, and mounted the UIM to the center of the cover.

I had to disassemble the UIM in order to get the cable through the holes in the ashtray cover and the ashtray housing. I am embarrassed to say that my first attempt at installing the UIM did not meet with complete success. I mounted it too high and the main switch button in the center of the module was being engaged by the CD disc changer whenever the ashtray cover was opened. I had to enlarge the hole and move the UIM lower.

This installation is destructive to the ashtray cover which can be replaced for about $130. If I ever remove the switch I will probably cover the hole with an MB logo from a key chain or use some similar decoration.

Wow.  Not bad at all!  Takes some nerve to install right in the curved wooden cover too.

OTOH, only $130 huh

Wow! That's awesome!

Can you take a side shot just so we can see how 'integrated' it looks?

And why the heck did you take a pic with it in "drive". Hopefully, you weren't actually driving while taking a picture!

AsianML - 4/23/2006 9:16 PM why the heck did you take a pic with it in "drive".

Sharp eyes, kid. But if he had it in Park then the shifter would have obscured the device from our view...

Re: Motorola IHF 1000 UIM module installed on ashtray cover

Originally I hoped to install the UIM without the bottom half. Unfortunately, the bottom have includes the hinge pins for the switches on either side of the UIM. I took a few photos with my cell phone. Fortunately, unless you are a Cocker Spaniel sitting in the passenger foot well, you really do not get a "sideview" of the UIM. I included a photo showing the cable loop and routing inside the ashtray. I intend to secure the cable to the inner back edge and top of the ashtray.
