AndrewAZ Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | Any of you guys see the 300sl on PBS? They had a show on last night about John Fitch it was called Gullwing at Twilight. I dont know if they show it on normal PBS since it was on my PBS HD channel. Boy the sound of the 300sl and seeing it in HD was crazy. Basically the show was about John Fitch who is a famous race car diver who is 70-80 trying to break the land speed record for the 300sl class. He is trying to get the 300SL up to 170mph. Its worth watching just for seeing the 300sl in high definition. Do we have any members who have a 300sl? I have seen one around where I live its blue but I am not sure if it is a kit car or original next time I see it driving around I will try and get closer.

The pure mechanical fuel injection would run briefly after the engine was off and gasoline would contaminate the motor oil. It had to be changed often.

If I remember right had came with 3 different gear packages so the top speed varied. But going 150mph at that time when most cars struggled to get to 100mph is impressive. If I ever want a super car forget Ferrari or Lamborgini I am going to get a 300SL its such a sexy car. Anyone want to start a donation so that my dream of owning a 300SL can come true?

He did tons of sports car racing many many years ago. His stepson and I went to middle school together. I got to ride in it a few times. It felt like a parade. The last time I saw the car was a few years ago at Concours Motors. It was in for a complete fuel injection rebuild. Augie told them to call him the bill was to exceed $20,000. The car is still in the Pabst collection. http://www.pabstracing.com/vintage.html I believe one was recently sold at the Barrett Jackson auction. Edited by Noodles 5/25/2006 10:59 PM

It was one of two in the event; but the other drove on before I could take a pic. The driver said that he purchased it from an owner in San Diego, CA, and brought it back to Europe.
