Play in Steering Wheel

Shlomo has about 2-3 inches of play in the steering column itself-- I stuck my hand down wherever the column meets the box and could move it all there.

I do not believe the play is coming from mechanical suspension/steering components, that it is just in the column?

How can I fix it? I'd rather not go futzing with adjusting the box if the fault does not lie there!

Actually, you check the suspension components first.  I would start with the ball joints and the steering damper.  Then check the box.  Adjusting the box when everything else is loose will only damage the box.
