| W210 shifts down to first on start off
Hi everybody !
According to the owners manual W210 5 speed automatic transmission should start off in second gear ( selector in "D") unless kickdown is activated in winter mode. My car shifts down into first gear almost emidiately on start off when accelerating gently rpm around 1500. Note that this is happening only after the car has been standing parked over night or long enough to be cooled down. The foult dissappers after driving about 1km. Outside temperature does not make any differens. Otherwise shifting is very good. Car has 180k km on the clock now and is a 1997 model.
Have anybody experiensed this or, have the knowledge of what this could be about? |

Perfectly NORMAL!
The 722.6 boxes are designed to stay in 1st gear for a Km or two, (depending on air temp) until the box is "warmed up", the theory being the higher rev's @ a low gear will cause more rapid heating.
Another point, the transmission should only start in 2nd gear if you have the "W" button engaged. Otherwise, it "should" start in 1st in the normal "S" mode.

Is it also normal that the startoff from stand still is very smoother in "S" mode than in "W" mode with the wehicle cold? I am not sure if it is the downshift from second gear to first gear or converter lockup that gives a "thump" on my back when i leave the parking place in the morning. This never happens if i use "S" mode. |
