Car phone kit external speaker mounted behind AC air nozzle

This part of the car phone kit installation was particularly satisfying. Initially I tried mounting the external speaker in the passenger foot well. It worked okay, but I found myself struggling to hear some soft spoken callers even with the volume turned up all of the way. I figured out how to remove the air nozzle which requires popping out the top louver and removing the wood trim to the left of the steering wheel. There was plenty of room to the right of the fuse block to mount the speaker. I fabricated a bracket clamp from a scrap piece of plastic. I used Allen head screws to attach the "clamp" since there is not enough room to get a screw driver or socket wrench behind the dash. I purchased a plastic wedge tool from MB to use to pry the wood trim off the dash.

I cut a hole in the bottom of the air nozzle. This hole is in front of the internal flap that can close off all of the air flow. The AC still seems to work normally. Sound quality is much better than it was in the passenger foot well.

Looks good. Another common option it use the exsisting speaker in the front floor kick panel speaker(s)

I considered using the Tele Aid speaker(s). I believe they are 8 ohms whereas the IHF 1000 speaker is 4 ohms. I think this mismatch would contribute to the volume problem. Also, I did not want to disturb the Tele Aid setup since I plan to renew the service.

I see, well for future reference the tele-aid speakers on the 211 are 4 ohms.

That's good to know. I will keep this in mind if I install a car phone kit in my SLK350 for which I did not renew the Tele Aid service.

The Tele Aid speakers on my 2005 W211 are 8 ohms. They are probably wired in parallel which would translate to a 4 ohm load on the amplifier.
