What would a 1980 280E with a manual transmission be like?
I saw one for a reasonable price--and think that maybe the added power, refinement and control over the driveline may be welcome additions to the w123 chassis I so adore already.
Have any of youall driven them? Owned them? Seems the car is cream exterior with a green interior-- I really hope it is as tacky as it sounds!  |

i say go for it.........a comparable 528i BMW is fast as hell, i know for a fact, so this must be good too..........
also, i drove a 74 280, and she was QUICK.......... |

Well-- I just called the person selling the car, and he does not have a key for it. I poked around and asked if the car had a cloth interior and he said it does.
We know what manual transmission and cloth interior mean, right?
He is getting married today and asked if I could call him back tomorrow or Monday, but I don't want to spoil any kind of honeymoon type festivities and such, but damn do I want to go look at this car to see if it has been terribly bastardized or if it still has most of the european bits on it!
It is cream exterior with green cloth interior, 1980 model 280e. He said it has a 'high performance' engine in it, but are euro-spec engines not a little stouter than US Spec ones?
I am crossing my fingers that it isn't too far gone. |

Eh-- I dunno, but I never thought about that.
The guy said the car was 'in good shape for being as old as it is' and that was about it. I do know that I'll drive the neon when I go to look, because last time, the lady did not accept my offer(on a euro 500se) thinking that I knew exactly what was wrong with the car just by my driving one myself.
I did lie to her and say that I didn't know how to repair them, that I only use the dealership for repair work-- I told her that I don't trust regular mechanics because they don't know what they're doing with an older MB. So I really didn't deserve the car-- lies are always bad, especially since I am honest to a fault! Just plain a bad liar--
We'll see tomorrow, I guess. It just seems like I shouldn't him-haw around with this car, its special, even if its tore up from the floor up, ya know? If for nothing else than just the lights, bumpers and wheels. It is priced as a parts car, basically. |

Oh-- I don't plan on parting the car unless it turns out to be a non-runner, and I am sure Nutz and Ike will help me troubleshoot anything on it until I can't troubleshoot anymore!
It sorta excites me, though-- a 200hp shlomo!
I guess in that case, I would have to just call him Mo-- as in 'not so shlo' mo  |

Make sure you can register a grey market car in your state. Some new owners have had problems before and not able to tag their cars. A Euro M110 is rated at 185 hp and uses a Bosch mechanical fuel injection system (K Jetronic) which although robust and well designed can be problematic with age. Make sure there are no vacuum or air leaks. This is not the simple system used on your 616 – you’re now dealing with plugs and wires, caps and rotors and a coil that needs to be energized by a good running alt. Leaking fuel distributors, worn injectors (they aren’t like diesel injectors), and other faulty fuel system components like the accumulator and fuel pump can be difficult to diagnose and pricey to replace.
Needless to say you need to take care in considering a gas MB of this era. I’d have someone check it out – a PPI.

The only attribute a diesel has over a gas engine is MPG . IMO these older gas engines are more reliable than any diesel engine. A M110 will run regardless of condition 9 out of 10 times at least unlike diesels which any little thing will set them off.

I love my MB gassers: they’re fast and smooth and quite – but they’re also more likely to leave me stranded then my diesel.
iNeon – I’d buy a 280 E or 280 SE in a heartbeat – excellent engine and cars; just be sure to have the car looked at first.

Finally got some pictures, doesnt look terribly rusty-- doesn't have the euro lights, but it does have cloth interior, rear headrests and (crusty) euro bumpers.
How much is a replacement european style front bumper? US bumpers bolt right on, right? Seems that I won't find euro parts at pick and pull, so I'd have to get US DOT ones in the meantime.
I am trying my best to get to make an appointment to see the automobile, but he gave me a cell phone number and it has gone straight to voicemail for the last 3 days *mad* I'll let youall know either way, but I just want to drive a 6 cylinder manual transmission w123 so badly, I may jump in-- even if the car is a beater. 185hp ain't so shabby, eh?
So I don't guess I've ever asked ya'll this-- is body work hard? heh heh VWs don't count-- they aren't unibody it looks like the front hasnt fared so well, but a grille and bumper are easy enough, the air dam is easy as well, there are missing trims and such, so I worry about the condition of the driveline, but not so much--

Note the passenger side tow hook - very EuroBenz.
