my linkage is acting wierd, i think.............

i'v always needed to replace the "rubber bands" that hold it steady, but lately, its very movable, and it metalicly clicks into each position...............

so, i guess all i did is break the final rubber band?

or is everything about to fall apart, and i'v been lucky?

Please Advise..........

You need to replace the shifter bushings. It's DIY but very tough w/o a lift. With worn bushings it is possible the car will not go in to gear - from R to D, for example - and you'll be stuck in the middle of the street.

The shifter bushings make sure the selector and gear are properly in place. It's not an overly expensive job - maybe $150 at an indy, p and l. More at a dealer, I suspect. Mercedessource sells the bushings and instructions in a kit. Bit again it's a PITA to get that those bushings on your back under the car - no leverage.

The only good indys I know are in Hillsborough: A and J's in N Tampa and Ledbetters' at 301 and MLK.

fwiw I can recommend them as honest shops. A and J's would be cheaper.
