What's in your transmission ?

Curious what transmission fluid is sloshing around in your automatic transmissions. I need to change my filter and fluid here shortly and would like to hear of some recommendations ( No Amsoil     ) . I've used Valvoline Dextron 3 for a while but I don't think it works that well, especially when it's warm outside.

Funny, I use Valvoline ATF here with no problem. All three tranny's shift smooth.

Might want to just try another name brand. I think it's more about changing the ATF and filter on time then what you use, as long as it's dex III, of course.

RE: What's in your transmission ?

Jdc,

That's usually how I feel about effects of temperature on trans fluid but maybe that I have a +100 degree difference in outside temperatures -20 F. to 80+ F. which may due something to the molecular structure ?? Haha,I'm wanting to slap myself for even throwing this theory out there ! I change my filters like clockwork, just think the choice of fluid is wrong for me.

No, that type of temp swing can be hard on a lubricant. Perhaps a synthetic or semi-synthetic?

RE: What's in your transmission ?

Yeah maybe that may be worth a try. I don't have any leaks so it may be okay. You think I should go with semi- synthetic at first just to be safe and then full-synthetic at the following change ?

Yeah, I think semi-synthetic would be good.

Re: What's in your transmission ?

They put plain ATF in my car when I had it changed, is that correct?

I've been noticing a "thump" between first and second sometimes, sometimes not. Hopefully the wrong fluid hasn't been in there for a year-- its about time to do it again...

Wonder if the price of a filter kit has gone up at the dealer, it was 45 bux last year-- cross your fingers.

If they used Dexron III they used the correct kind.

The online stores sell the filter and gasket for under 20 bucks.

No idea about the thump.

Re: What's in your transmission ?

But I get conflicting advice from everyone concerning this--

Half think that anything beyond dealer parts is abuse/neglect and the other half say that all the parts are fast turning to indian/taiwanese crap, and that it won't make much difference either way.

Which is it?

ElringKlinger AG, Febi, Bilstein, and Mann, are some of the AT filter makers that are OEM, sold online, and are reliable.

I hope you caught it in time. Perhaps there's no damage to the transmission as it was in there for only a few miles.
