Ok so I think I need a new car, I just took it the shop cause the engine light was on and now they tell me I need a new transmission for 5k so what would you do, get a newer benz or get it fixed and run it to 300k+ miles?...lol

Re: transmission

Damn, that truly sucks. One thing you could do is look at junk yards and try and find a new transmission. To be honest $5,000 seems fairly high for a transmission, even with the work of installing it. I would also ask around at some dealers or good independant mechanics and see what their estimates are.

Also you might be able to get another W124 for about the same price. How many miles did you put on that transmission?

RE: transmission

It's a giant step to go from a Check Engine light on to saying you need a new tranny. Why did they say that, what are the syptoms? I have put over 200,000 miles on 2 different 300E's and never touched the transmissions on either one. One of them developed a fluid leak at the seal which I was too cheap to repair, I just put in some ATF every once in a while and it ran fine. The W124 is one tough tranny. like the whole car. I would get a 2nd opinion before dropping $5k. If your transmission is slipping, check the fluid level. If necessary, change the fluid and filter if you don't know when it was last changed.

Re: transmission

it was a code that came up on their system, its just a local shop that I have taken my cars to for 15 years. Should I take it to a mercedes dealership and have them look at it first? There is a slight stall from first to second in the morning when I first start it but after that i dont notice anything. I dont know im so bummed out they told me to sell it and not buy another one. what gives?

It sounds like your shop has no respect for your car . They probably hate working on your car because they don't have the knowledge about it.

I would try a independent Mercedes-Benz shop. Here's what the Guys on the Merecedes-Benz of America Froum say about a shop in Seattle.

Re: transmission

thank you I found a german car shop in Bellvue the guy has 25 years experience, I am taking to him tomorrow to get a diagnosis from them, I guess the mechanic that I took it to just farms out the mercedes stuff anyway and im not cool with that. So I will no more in a few days! I will keep you posted.

There are no symptoms except the check engine light. like I said it revs a bit higher when Its cold in the morning but after that its fine, I asked this guy from the german car shop and he said thats normal. Im so curious to find out what they come up with.

RE: transmission

You can't take these cars to mere mortals. Find yourself a good MB indy mechanic who was factory trained. Most of them really enjoy working on these cars. My mechanic is fantastic; honest and always a straight shooter. He has told me what I need to do, and more importantly, has told me what I shouldn't do. (Even if this means less work and money for him)

Stay away from the dealers. More than a few indies have told me horror stories from SA's and Managers who are trying to inflate invoices.

You can also try a transmission shop.

Re: transmission

update: I took it to this shop http://www.germanauto.com/ they were straight up and had all kinds of MB parked in front...new old was a wonderful place to be...anyway they diagnosed a problem with the upshifting and an emissions sensor, also the front was making this clank and said the tierods need to be fixed...so its gonna cost me 1300 bucks ....thats much better than 5k I also asked him if the car was worth keeping and he said the car is strong but may need the wiring harness done. so I will keep it but a few grand into and hopefully cross my fingers it will go another 100k.
