Purchase Checklist

There is an 86 300E for sale with 110,000 miles for $4600 (too high?) here. Like what are the common hidden areas of rust and other little surprises  I should be on the lookout for? TIA

RE: Purchase Checklist

The miles are nice but she’s still a 20 year old car – time takes its toll as well. The price is too high if she does not have all the books and complete service records.

RE: Purchase Checklist

The ads says "awesome condition" but I've heard that one more than once. I'm going to go check it out and take it for a test drive here in a few minutes.Whats nice is that it's located in a mountainous area with a lot of twist and turns so.....................

Looked nice but a POS

Well it was a sharp 300E but appearance was all it had going for it. It squeaked,it rattled,it sputtered when you got on the accelerator,it was a chain smokers car judging by the pungent odor that lingered,4 previous owners, oil coated engine and well it goes on and on. But it was pretty

An MB from that era that rattles? Not good.

RE: Purchase Checklist

The rattles came from the front suspension like the shims that go on the calipers were missing or components were worn out.

OK, can't say that's 'better,' though.

Looks like another abused or neglected MB.

You still going to try to find a 124?

RE: Purchase Checklist

I wasn't even in the market for a W124,just liked the price   I've been trying to find the wife a bigger MB for some time now (she's driving the W201). She wants a new G500 but I don't want to spend that kind of money at this time (I even caught her at the MB dealer taking a test drive ).

RE: Purchase Checklist

The price is about right for a 90 or 91 124, I’d look there.

If you’re looking past 91 I’ve got to say good bye and good luck…

Re: Purchase Checklist

What happened to the w124 in 1991?

Is that when they got the newschool 3.2?

I saw a very nice 1993 300e, gorgeous condition, but it had that ugly orange tinted tan interior(palomino?) and 125,000 miles-- they wanted 6500, which I thought was high, so I never called.

RE: Purchase Checklist

The 104 (3.2 L) was in the 124 coupe in 90 and in the sedan and wagon in 93.

The interior color not withstanding, 6500 USD is not out of line for the miles only if it had all service records and was in good overall condition.

Edit: sorry iNeon, I should have read your post in response to my post.

The infamous 'green' wiring harness was used starting in 92. The failure of this component caused many - expensive - problems for later 124s and and made the 140 a tough car to own. It marks the beginning of the end of Mercedes as a quality car maker.

Urban legend has it that in 92 to be PC DB insulated the harness with a non petroleum based material. This material deteriorated quickly and caused many electronic gremlins.

Re: Purchase Checklist

Gotcha--

So it would be an OK deal if there is a receipt for the wiring harness replacement?

One more quick question-- Is this the engine that needs the head gasket repaired as well?
