Not 2 or 3....But 4!!!

I always thought that the 7G-Tronic tranny could downshift and skip up to 2 or 3 gears, but when I was lurking the mbusa.com site earlier, I found out it could skip up to 4 gears!!!!

And it does it all-too-readily... I find it hard to get it to downshift just one gear.

But then I can be impatient

Can't you just use the shifter to make it downshift one, and then put it back in D?

RE: Not 2 or 3....But 4!!!

Hmm... thinking more now, if you shift it manually one gear will it stay in that new gear even if you stomp on the accelerator?

Not that I would ever do that...

Let's say you downshift it manually to 6th from 7th gear. Even if you stomp on the accelerator the engine will jsut stay at redline, and will never pass that. At least that's what I read, it happened to us once and that's what happened.

BTW, even if it says 6th or whatever in the little display, that doesn't mean that it will always stay in 6th. That just means that 6th is the highest it will go. When you slow down it will still go to lower gears.

If people want to so readily pretend they have control of their transmissions, why don't they BUY A F****** MANUAL. Is a clutch really so damned hard to mash? Thank you for the space to rant.

No problem, I don't know how to drive a manual yet so I shall resort to the TipTronic until I learn. It's not really the clutch for me at least, it's the revs when you downshift and upshift.

BTW, what does it mean to "blip" the throttle? I also read that about the 7G-Tronic.

My E320 has a five-speed transmission with TipTronic. And I find that it gives a very accurate sporty feel. What new Mercedes-Benz product with TipTronic have you drove lately?

Re: Not 2 or 3....But 4!!!

I fail to see the relevancy of my having never driven a Mercedes-Benz with a TouchShift transmission. I've driven many an automatic and used to play like turning overdrive off and shifting through 1st, 2nd and 3rd was more sporting; but ya know what? It isn't. An automatic by any other name is still a slushbox that bleeds power and control from the driver.

Tiptronic is a Porsche trademark, to my knowledge there has never been a Mercedes fitted with a Tiptronic transmission-- You know-- since we're getting catty and all.

It's a lot like democratic society, this 'manumatic' thing-- they really only charge you more to pretend you have any control what so ever. In reality, you're just along for the ride, someone in a cushier chair than yours has already made the decisions for you.

Slush box? You must be thinking of the older automatic and manual Chrysler front wheel drive transmissions. Yes they are a piece of shit
Slush box. But the new advanced Mercedes-Benz transmissions are allot different then transmissions from yesteryear. They have an excellent sports car feel in sports mode. The comfort mode and sports mode are not pretend. And you being full of BS isn't pretend either . It's a fact.

You'd do well to learn basic inference technique. I said democratic society-- not democrat-- as in "government by the people for the people" Speak to me about a piece of s*** when your Mercedes-Benz gets to 150,000 miles with 4 repairs. =)

Asian-- I've never driven a new Mercedes-Benz.

My experience comes from VW Jettas with sport shifters, Dodge Intrepids with AutoStick and various other automatics I've shifted manually. They may allow you to manually select a gear, but if you've EVER driven a real manual, you'll understand why I say what I do.

They are still automatics-- just automatics dressed up as 'manuals' for Halloween.

The Mercedes-Benz TouchShift is much faster. Then the dodge intrepid AutoStick . I know this for a fact. I used to drive a Chrysler 300M and it had AutoStick . The Mercedes-Benz transmission is totally different , then the 300M's transmission.

The 300M had the same problem as the jetta. It was front wheel drive. And Front wheel drive sucks.

I bet it will fall apart just as well as your piece of s*** has.

I have never owned a car that has had over 50,000 miles. In fact. I bought the E320 New in October 2004 . It now only has 14,329 miles plan trading it off in a few months for another Mercedes-Benz.

Re: Not 2 or 3....But 4!!!

Why all the hostility? I merely stated that 'manually' shifting an automatic(even if provisions are made by the manufacturer) transmission is an exercise in futility; torque converters are not a direct link between the engine and transmission. The fluid bears the burden, not a solid object-- this is where the term 'slush' comes from-- not the manufacturer of the transmission itself. By 'selecting' a gear, you are really only suggesting that the computer allow you to make a decision-- not actually making one. This is not an attack-- were it one, I'd have made an ironic commentary about an alleged cowboy driving some German piece of s*** in the midwest. Ya gawt any rahnstownes on that thar brushpopper, bwah? Wranglers squeezin ya boys too tight?

RE: Not 2 or 3....But 4!!!

You guys are lucky you didn't see me driving today.

For once, I was something of a madman behind the wheel.

Combo of getting stuck behind sleepers & phone chatters, too much to do, and too little time (I realize that sadly, this is normal for most people)

Anyway, the point is that I had occasion to actually floor the accelerator of the E more than once.

You know that 'learning' transmission thing? Well, the damned thing didn't know what to do, each time. Kind of did nothing for a couple seconds. Too many gears to choose from, I think.

Not the result you want huh.... but it's probably learned my normal sedate driving style (oriented toward mpg not performance) and was wondering who the f*ck it was behind the wheel today

Anyway, I think it's better to be more gradual with the pedal, at least in my case

Re: Not 2 or 3....But 4!!!

You can always reset the ecu thingy everytime you drive. After resetting it, the car always feels more responsive, and some people have reported better mpg.

Besides when slam the accelerator to the kickdown switch, it should normally downshift.....I don't see what's so hard about downshifting......what gear were you on before that.....I guess it would be hard to figure out considering you have 7 gears to remember compared to our 5......doesn't your E350 have a broken grille.....okay I'm done.
