| Stupid diesel!! IMHO POS!
Every diesel benz I have bought in the past 6 months has craped out with in 8 weeks. IMHO POS!!! An 85 300cd 198K and an 80 300TDT 245K paid $2100 for the CD and $350 for the TDT. Motor pooped in 85 and tranny in 80. What should I do guys, I thought diesels were so great...yeah right POS!!! Looking for gasser now.

Yeah,everyone claims that these diesels are so great and bulletproof but fact of the matter is a W123 gasser is 100 times more reliable. Look for a 230 or 280 and you'll be good to go.

If you paid $350 for the TD and expected a perfect running car, you were asking for trouble. There is nothing more expencive than a cheap Mercedes.

Diesels will last forever IF proper maintenance was done along the way. If neglected, not so much. Tough to know how some of the higher mileage cars were treated along the way.
Although I've got five oil burners, I'd like to experience the W123 chassis with a gas engine as well. |

Sorry for the bad experience you had with the diesels, just know that they aren't all that way. My wife and I have driven a total of six diesels (220D, 240D, 300D, 2-300CD's and a 300SD) for a cumlative total of around two million miles. Also, there is a guy on the MBWorld site that has a '73 220D that he bought new and now has 850K miles on it - runs great and he is going to give it to his grandson who is now old enough to drive.
So, if you like the old diesels, don't get discouraged, but just remember, a bargain is only a bargain the day you lay your money down. |

You're buying 20-year-old cars and expect them to be perfect? Economics 101: If they're perfect, you'll pay accordingly. BTW, "perfect" means a LOT of things were replaced yesterday. A dumb post. |

Luck of the draw. Cars treated like crap and neglected enough will be crap. On average they are a very reliable and long lived bunch. As in everything there are exceptions. |
