126 vs 140

Ok. Those of you out there who have owned a 126 time to be honest. Is the 126 better built than the 140...

Re: 126 vs 140

It's a hard one. The 140 is really well built but has a lot of flaws with the gadget side of things. The 126s I've owned have ticked along with no worries at all. My 140 has been good so far but not perfect by any means. I do like the finish and feel of the 126. It's pretty hard to beat a '90 560SEL

The 126 are very very nice cars but I think the design is dated, where as the W140 still looks quite modern. Still not bad for a car that began in 79.

Re: 126 vs 140

dated maybe but the 'overall' build I think is better. But I still think the 124 is the best. All three are very close but I my own personal experence the 124 stands out. But then again the G Wagon is up there all on it's own

It is a very hard choice. The 124, 126, 140, and 461 are all very well built cars.

well, that may be right. But I've never owned a G or a 124. Sitting in one doesn't give the full experience.

But yeah, that order seems to be right.

Re: 126 vs 140

I can only compare 124 and 140 as i've owned both, and 124 made me fall in love with mercs in general its just such well ballanced car which can take lots of abuse and will never disapoint, now i have 140 just because i had some need to "upgrade" but i dont think 140 is better then 124 its just different car all together.
What is G class like?

Re: 126 vs 140

G is awesome. Built so well. I can cruise along at 100kph with next to no wind noise as well. And that's my one that is built in '83!

RE: 126 vs 140

The W140 is boring in appearance, and not a model to get excited about when it comes to reliability comparison to the 126 either.

RE: 126 vs 140

Remember that like all S Class cars as the flagship from 81* to 91 the 126 got all the new technology increasing significantly the potential for reliability problems. But the 126 was able to shoulder this burden well and still be one of the most reliable S Class cars (and MBs overall, for that matter) of all time.

The 126 pioneered much of the technology used in the 124 allowing the 124 to be reliable and successful. The 129, and to a certain extent the 140, benefited considerably from the 126's real world application of new technology.

*The 116 was still in production to 1980 and I would say as the older of the two the 116 would still be considered the flagship. You must also include the 116 in any such S Class discussion, they were also very strong and reliable and the 6.9 was a bone fide 7 series killer.

Re: 126 vs 140

I guess the point is when did Benz start to decline in build quality. Some say the 126 was the last of the great Mercs. Others will argue that the 116 was the last. Then others say the 140. Talking to Merc mechanics they said the 140 was the last of the high build quality but the first of the tech nightmares. But I guess the difference between them all is small compared to other cars around the world.

I think that's exactly right, and the same prob goes for the 123 vs 124..
