Oil leaking from underneath dashboard

Hello all,

My '83 200D is leaking oil from underneath the dashboard. It drips down the steering column onto the pedals. Since I am no technical expert I would like to ask any of you what this could be.

The oil looks and feels like ordinary engine oil but I don't understand how engine oil could get inside the car.

The only thing I can think of is that the oil pressure gauge is hooked up directly to the engine by means of a tube and that either the connection or the tube is leaking. Does the oil pressure gauge gets its read out directly from an oil line or is it connected to an electrical/pressure sensor?

I hope that one of you can help me out so that I can have the problem solved as for right now I am getting my pants and shoes covered in oil all the time. This makes my wife unhappy ... laundry and all

Thanks in advance,

Kees

RE: Oil leaking from underneath dashboard

Kees--

You are correct in assuming the oil pressure gauge gets its reading directly from an engine oil source-- there is a line that runs into the interior and that may be leaking.

Another possible reason is maybe your vacuum shut-off valve has gone bad-- those sometimes send engine oil into the cabin(around the key switch) as well! The drips almost never end up directly beneath wherever the leak is because of the multitude of things to drip on, and the under-dash hushpanels and such.

For your better half:

I've heard that dish soap does a good job of removing the stains in the carpets, I don't know about pants-- Just don't wear your best wool until you get it fixed

EDIT:

The gauge itself may be bad and leaking as well, my reply sort of sounds like only the lines leak!

I second that. Its the tube or the guage itself. Make sure the line is snug and if it still leaks you nead a new guage assembly.

RE: Oil leaking from underneath dashboard

This happened to me with a 1986 280 GE. It was the line that was leaking. It was dripping onto the floormat from under the dash. Simple Green will get the stains out.

RE: Oil leaking from underneath dashboard

Speaking for my Father (KC W123) ... Thanks for your response guys!

Couple of questions still remain,

First and foremost ... is this something we can fix ourselves or does it involve stripping half the dash away and then some?

Second by chance, is there anybody who has the part number(s) for this tube/line and gauge?

Third, any indication on the cost would be welcome.

And finally fourth, If a mechanic would have to be called in (due to our own lack of technical knowledge and skills ) what sort of time frame would be normal in order to solve the problem?

This last question because of some experiences we have had in the past concerning the working ours on the bill.

Heaps of thanks ... regards,

Kees (KC W123) and Rick (NorthseaRoughneck)

All you have to do is remove the instrument cluster, the dash stays put.

Third, any indication on the cost would be welcome.

Well under $100 in the US, not sure about Europe.

RE: Oil leaking from underneath dashboard

Once again, thanks for your replies guys!

We took out the instrument cluster today and unfortunately it's not a leaking connection. By the looks of it it's the oil pressure gauge assy.

Will try to get a new gauge assy. tomorrow. Or at least order one.

We'll post some pics later about the whole operation (disassembly and assembly).

Regards,

KC W123 and NorthseaRoughneck

Here are some pictures ...

Hello all,

I have attached a few pictures we took when we took the instrument cluster out. We ended up changing out the entire gauge assy. (Fuel, Engine temperature and Oil pressure meters) with a second hand one.

We bought it for €75,00 which is still expensive for a gauge that came from a car that had done 290K+ kilometers. But it was a whole lot cheaper than buying a new gauge for the nice price of €264,00 (P/N A003 540 46 47)

The guy we bought it from apologized for the amount of KM's the donor car had done but we just kind of laughed and told him that a car that has 'only' done 290K+ KM's was never really broken in

As of tomorrow I will be back on the road, with clean pants, adding some kilometers to the 683.185 KM's already on the clock

My son will draw up a small guideline of the entire process with more pictures attached for those of you who are interested. He will report back here when he's done with it.

Thank you all for your input!

Regards,

Kees
