GREETINGS, ANOTHER PICTORIAL SHOWING STEERING WHEEL REMOVAL. IN MY CASE, THE STEERING COLUMN WAS LOOSE, CAUSING THE WHOLE COLUMN TO ROTATE EVERYTIME YOU USE THE TURN SIGNAL. DROVE ME NUTS, SO HERE'S THE REPAIR. PLEASE NOTE, THE WIS SPECIFIES DISCONNECTING THE BATERY PRIOR TO AIRBAG REMOVAL. INSTEAD, I JUST LET THE CAR SIT FOR AWHILE, TO LET ANY CHARGE IN THE SRS SYSTEM DISSIPATE. I CLAIM NO EXPERTISE, JUST WORKING FROM THE WIS. WORK AT YOUR OWN RISK.

c0tkhan Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: PHOTO DIY- STEERING WHEEL REMOVAL I have a 1998 SL500 and having same problem. I am trying to buy this 3 inch long T-25 Torx bit and having a tough time. I checked Napa, sears, auto zone and other parts stores but no luck. The longest bit I could find is 2 inches long and thats not long enough to open airbag piece Any info would be highly appreciated Thanks, Tariq

WARNING! - WARNUNG! To remove the airbag assembly takes a T30 bit, not a T25. Using the wrong bit is a potentially terrible mistake to make, which I just did. For reference, it appears that the proper tool for air-bag equipped G's is a 70mm length T30 bit, MB part # 126 589 00 10 00. Check the WIS WS46.00-P-0033b. I'm not an authority or expert on G's, and for legal reasons I disclaim any knowledge on how to repair them and the accuracy of the content of my post here. I am just posting my personal experience, a true (and very expensive) ordeal that I do not wish to see anyone else repeat. I'll post pics of the gory aftermath of stripping out one of those screws if anyone really wants to see. Believe me, it is not a pretty sight. Garret

Garret I'll confirm the tool number and the T30 Torx bit size. Even with the proper tool, it's all too easy to strip out that screw head; since it's blue Loctited in place. So get the proper tool, seat it well (perhaps with a few taps of a hammer) and maintain good seating pressure while turning.

I have changed out to a wood/leather steering wheel. This post was the perfect tool. Thanks to the author who took the time and made the removal an easy task.
