Have read that one of the ways 'modern' diesels are achieving higher fuel efficiency and less emissions is by pre-heating the diesel before injection. And, since we now have many ways to pre-heat (via the Veggie Oil conversions), I wonder if pre-heating my diesel fuel would make my engine run better. I do believe, however, that one must be careful not to heat up the main tank too much as it will cause condensation over time. Does anybody have feedback on this? Thanks!!!

Like veggie you could have an aux tank to heat the diesel, something easy to remove and clean should there be a problem. I’m not sure the benefit would be significant enough to warrant such a project, however. A better project would be to upgrade the glow system to an ‘after glow’ system where the plugs stay on for a period of time after the engine is running. Obviously this heats the engine faster for less smoke and better overall performance.

MB diesels starting with the 190D 2.2 in 1984 and the 1986 300SDL have fuel heaters built into the engine. Fuel temps below 80*f, they run the fuel through a heat exchanger in the coolant.

If your 79 is not running well, and you aren't using RedLine diesel catalyst - Start using it. I used it in a 79 300CD from day one to 425,000 miles and it never smoked or started hard. I currently use Redline in our 82 300SD and 84 300CD both have over 200K miles and run like new - you can floor them and they don't smoke.

What became of your coupe? (As you can see I'm nearing those miles in my 123, so I'd like to know).

Have you guys ordered your high mileage grill badges from Mercedes yet? They are free and come with a certificate. You will probably recieve 2 badges for your grill. I got mine a few years back for a 240D that had 450,000 miles on her and she stil ran like new. A guy bought her from me for the same amount as i had originally payed for her. Mark
