E320 starts and stalls

My 98 E320 has been running flawlessly. Just took a 1000 mile round trip from Bay Area to LA. When I went to start the car to leave LA, it started, then died. This happened several times. I waited 5 minutes, and it started and ran. I drove all the way home without stopping just in case it happened out in the middle of Interstate 5.
The car has 61000 miles on it, original plugs. It got 30.5 mpg on the trip, and ran smooth. The next day it started and my wife went to the store. When she got back in, it started and stalled again. I went down and got it started and drove home.

Any ideas? Should I change plugs, or anything else?

RE: E320 starts and stalls

It sounds like you're Crank Position Sensor (CPS) is failing .

I took it to my indie and he said 99% chance it was crank sensor. Out the door for $140. Not too bad, saved the headache of doing it myself.

RE: E320 starts and stalls

The crank sensor certainly sounds right. I have had the very same symptom on my Jeep, that turned out to be a dirty throttle body. After cleaning it, the stalling and stopping all improved. On my 190E however, a dirty throttle body seems to cause uneven idle and some performance issues.

You should likely change your plugs as well. Giving the engine every opportunity to run well is always the best path.

Happy trails.
