I don't think the big grille makes it aggressive at all. There aren't any dramatic curves or lines in the Audi. It's very...German looking. Looks as tank like as the W126 or W140 looked like.

Thats why I like the new & series so much.

They've all just about deleted the side body trims, except Audi-- and these are the very best... I'm sad.

Re: Luxury Car Showdown

I guess these people don't care about door dings and shopping carts. I just got back from the supermarket and there was a SL55 AMG in the front row surrounded by shopping carts. I cringed.

If it becomes standard practice to delete any sembelance of a bodyside moulding-- I swear I'll be one of those old men that has black rubber universal mouldings fitted.

Today, I was sitting IN MY CAR when the guy next to me opens his door directly into mine-- "oops... sorry, buddy." he says. "Yeah, right" was my reply.

People have become accustomed to disposable automobiles in such a big way that they line up en masse to overpay for automobiles with a *reputation* for being long-lived. I saw a perfectly nice 1997 Grand Am at the junker today-- 250,000 miles. Oddly enough, it was a 5-speed/ manual windows model.

Here I was thinking MBs are the only automobiles capable of such mileage....

That odo was tampered with!!

I think cars look cleaner without side moldings. The XJ8 and the 7-Series I posted look a little weird without them because they have the trim on the front and back bumpers, but the sides don't. Then again, if you added them on, I don't think it'd look good either.

I still maintain that painted bumpers are evidence of collusion between mfr's and body shops.

Merely touch them and the paint comes off.  Once upon a time, cars had real, functional bumpers.

They could take a nudge and show nothing, thanks to shock absorbers and rubber strips

Doors on a 10-year old automobile look like cottage cheese-thighs if they don't have rub strips. Most still look like ass, even with them-- rub strips for automobiles protect nothing against dents caused by SUVs that are a foot off the ground.

Marsie hit the nail on the head-- there are reasons new automobiles come with: 1) huge crystal headlamps 2) no side mouldings 3) painted plastic front bumpers and 4) ecru/pale grey interiors with no dark options...

Those reasons are: headlamp hazing will make the owner want a new car when they're yellow at 5 years old. 2) door dents from 5 years of trips to the grocer and wal*mart without side mouldings will make the owner want a new car after 5 years. 3) 100k interstate miles will leave plastic air dams mangled and hoods looking like pizza-faced teenagers and will make the owner want a new car after 5 years and 4) 1800 cups of morning coffee will leave enough drips to ravage a pastel interior and make the owner want a new car after 5 years.

It's forced replacement, and every company is doing it these days. An automobile can not be serviced to last indefinitely-- they have a shelf life.
