DIY: Lower Rear Headrest Manually

The retractable rear headrest system in the W124 sedan consists of several independent parts which are prone to failure, so here is an easy way to retract the rear headrests for much greater rear visibility until you can trouble-shoot the retraction system and repair it.

1: Inside the boot/trunk (in Australia it's called a boot), remove the trim barrier that separates the boot space from the fuel tank and set aside.

2: Climb into the boot on your back with your legs hanging out the tail gate, over the rear bumper. Inform your wife/significant other of your intentions - a tailgate slamming down on one's knees unintentionally (or otherwise) hurts.

3: Reach up and you will see the rear headrest lowering and locking system. Looking up at the headrest, locate the black vacuum actuator can on the RHS of each unit.

4: On the top of the vacuum actuator can there is a button that supports the headrest locking mechanism. Keeping your fingers clear of any moving parts, depress the button on the top of the can - the headrest should fall to the lowered position. The mechanism is spring loaded and manually triggering the actuator may require some pressure.

5: Replace the rear trim piece that separates the boot compartment from the fuel tank.
