Vibration, Vibration, Vibration...

I have a 2002 E320 with about 65k miles, I just had the tires replaced/balanced and the alignment done at the dealer (the tire prices were pretty competitive). Anyway, before the work was done the front end had a high frequency vibration especially at higher speeds. The old tires (Michellin) were feathered so I figured it was the alignment.

Fast forward, all new Michellins, four wheel alignment and all was well for about two weeks, now the vibration is back especially when accelerating, I can feel it in the steering wheel and through the gas pedal. I drive a stretch of very smooth pavement on the way to/from work and that is where it is especially noticeable, on the freeway too...Any ideas??

Sometimes I wonder if I'm imagining things because I swear it feels like it only does it some of the time but I'm so paranoid now I don't know.

RE: Vibration, Vibration, Vibration...

Hi rmenses

I had similar issues with my tires and alignment. I suffered for almost half an year without any resolution. I changed tires twice in between but nothing came in handy. Someone gave me suggestion to go to some heavy vehicle tire dealers who uses Load or Finish Balancers (I don't know what actually they are called), these are used for balancing tires for huge tires, lets say for small/medium trucks and buses. I tried it and after that day it is as smooth as cream. No vibration, shudder or even roughness in ride at high speeds.

I hope you can find some in your vicinity and resolve the problem.

Re: Vibration, Vibration, Vibration...

Thank you very much for the response, this is driving me nuts. The tires weren't cheap and I don't want to have to replace them again because of alignment issues.

RE: Vibration, Vibration, Vibration...

Believe it or not, engine mounts could be the culprit.

Hope you resolve it.

Re: Vibration, Vibration, Vibration...

I though about that but the tires seem to be feathering again, and they are only a couple of weeks old...I'll have them check the engine mounts when I take it back in for them to check on the "great" alignment job they did.

I also thought about engine mounts but if they're feathering again after just a coupleof weeks, I'll have the entire front suspension checked.  My suspicion is schocks or ball joints - mor shocks than balls.  Post whatever you find out.

Re: Vibration, Vibration, Vibration...

She's at Mercedes Benz of South Bay as we speak, I'll let you guys know what happens...shocks, that may be it. I'll call the sercive writer guy and let him know about checking the whole front end, he said they were going to put their shop foreman on it because it doesn't make sense.

We shall see. Good thing is that she's covered until 2009.

Re: Vibration, Vibration, Vibration...

Well,

Surprisingly, I got the car back in one day. Salarzae, the Mercedes Dealer here in Manhattan Beach used a load balancer on the tires and did a re-balance, they re-checked the alignment and he gave me the print-out and it is all way within spec.

cmitch, the front engine mounts were collapsed, and what do you know...vibration is GONE! They also replaced all of the spark plug wires, they said the 1,3,5, & 6 had high resistance while the 2 & 4 were ok, so they just did them all. (all of this free of charge, I bet they hate that extended warranty)

I hope that the re-balance and weekly air pressure checks will stop the minimal feathering that occurred. The engine mounts got rid of the vibration, this would explain the more pronounced vibration when accelerating or having my foot on the gas at higher speeds. They think the feathering was due to the fact that the wife-unit may have over-inflated the tires...

Anyway, hope this helps someone out in the future if they were to face the same problem.

Thanks again guys.

O
