Here’s the VIN conversion for US cars so they can be checked in the site Storm posted:
Delete digits/letters between the ‘B’ and ‘A’:
WDBCA24D6MA599620 – WDB A599620
Place a ‘1’ in front of the ‘A’ – WDB 1A599620
Place your chassis number between the ‘B’ and ‘1’:
WDB1260241A599620 – ‘126024’ for a 91 300 SE.
Also, your ‘proper’ VIN is on the true firewall, passenger’s side.

If DB had just kept the VINs the same regardless of market we would not need to convert. Oh well, must have been a good reason, some DOT thing, perhaps.

When checking the ATF today (changed the fluid and filter – what a PITA job) I noticed the butchered VIN on the 300 SE’s firewall, maybe it’s a pre-86 thing.   |
