Now my girlfriend wants an ML. I don't have a lot of experience with them, so here I am... I am considering both M163 and M164's. What years and models should I stay away from and why? Are there any features or parts that are problematic? Has anyone experienced any issues with the AWD compared to the 2WD? How many miles should I expect before having service issues?

Go with the W164. They are much better designed and built. I'm partial to the CDI. I wish I had not sold mine.

These models have problems including transmission valve body and control module, front differential and balance shaft failures. I just dumped my high liability W164 ML350. I just didn't have the stomach for all the problems even tho I had a warranty.

I just didn't have the stomach for all the problems even tho I had a warranty. Mine was built in December 06. After several software/firmware flashes and installation of the new upgraded ATF, there were no real problems. Wish I hadn't sold it; although I'm liking this Q7 TDI a lot.
