166 ML250CDI Buetec

I was wondering if the US have been offered the baby (for SA) entry level ML250CDI BT? It is a 2.1l 4 pot turbo diesel that makes 150kW and 500Nm and uses between 6-6.5l/100km. The prices are quite attractive compared to the larger cc and higher spec models on offer. Went and had a look at them as they have only been recently launched here. Quality seems to be way up on the 163 that I used to have.

MBUSA would rather die then offer a fuel efficient MB in the USA.  They seem to have some sort of blind spot to the idea that one can have a well made vehicle that is also economical to operate.  Shame on them.

Not bringing in the small BlueEfficiency engines is just sad.

By my calculations, if I were to swap out the OM606 for the 250 BlueEfficiency, I'd have a 30MPG W463.  Even better with some axle changes.  The new motor would have between 36% and 50% more torque where it mattered and it would weigh much less.

If I manage to blow up the OM606, I'll be seriously tempted to try the swap.

In actuality, in the ML, they are already here in the USA. The Vance, AL plant makes them, but they are all exported. It's a Free Trade Zone; so while they are physically on US soil, they are technically not in the US.

This is similar to the off-road package in the ML and GL. When we toured the plant a few years ago, they took us on the off-road test track. All of the vehicles were R-O-W ML's & GL's with the off-road package - not available for sale in the US.

MBUSA Marketing really has their heads firmly planted where the sun never shines. But of course, if the VP for Marketing cannot even spell Gwagen, what is to otherwise be expected.

Well, I just took delivery of this sweet little mill in a E250; not quite an ML but good for 40.2 mpg on a road trip at 70-80 mph. New car with 500 miles when we left; I'm tickled!
