Dieter said there would be for the US. The G's shown at the Detroit Auto Show are Euro models and cannot have a brush bar.

RE: 2019 G offroad

My local dealer claims to have deposits on and already sold three 2019's sight unseen by the buyers.

Re: 2019 G offroad

The switch to IFS shouldn’t be a big deal. I moved out of the G into a land cruiser 200 last year and it’s IFS set up is robust; bulletproof and upgradable. Great on road manners and extremely capable off road out of the box, Some of the ppl on there really beat in them off road and they hold up without failure.for those looking for more...LC’s have a much smaller following in the US than the G and the aftermarket has created several lift kits for the LC. I have no doubt that the aftermarket will step up and offer lift kits that will improve articulation and ground clearance for the new G.

There’s pictures of the drivetrain on the Daimler link above. There driveshaft between the trans and transfer case has been removed trans and transfer case are now bolted together for better or worse.

We’re never going back to simple off road vehicles. eletronics/telematics/nannys are here to stay. Look at the new wrangler even in base trim there’s more eletronics. For simple buy a 80/90’s G.

Im excited about this and looking to move back into a new G in the future. Now if they could only bring the new inline 6 diesel over in the new G would be some truck!

What is the issue if transmission and transfer case are bolted together?

I don't see a problem with the transmission and transfer case being combined. The UNIMOGs have been doing it for years. If you think about it, this unit will be unique to the G-Wagons and not just another beefed-up sedan transmission. It also allows the G-Wagon to make a wider gear-set that can span both high and low. The transmission/gearbox can seamlessly go Low-1 -> Low-2 -> High-1st -> High-2nd -> 3rd no differently that it would go from 1st -> 2nd -> 3rd... You would never have to switch between High and Low. Instead you would be taking advantage of additional "granny gears" when you want to operate off-road or pull a really heavy load up an incline.  It would also have multiple reverse gears too.

All of the gears are electronically controlled anyways (including if they are used whether a button is pushed or not). The possibilities are exciting...

Re: 2019 G offroad

The wife said she wants one. Happy wife happy life.

The additional refinement and comfort at the sacrifice of solid front axle and increased footprint will make it much more pleasant to live with every day and getting to the good stuff. I like the improved approach and departure angles, it could be just enough of an improvement to reduce my rear bumper dragging tendency's. For me, this is a Porsche replacement not a G500 replacement.

I am always concerned about a first year for a major model change like this. I usually like to let others do the teething and buy a year after it's been out and about. Although, I do have to admit that it is very tempting. Dieter makes it sound very good in his model intro in Detroit.

RE: 2019 G offroad

That 21 mpg (11.1 l/100km) fuel economy indicated in the Daimler link is a big improvement, if it's real.

From snowy (~3") and cold (15°F) Atlanta.

Arnold says he improved himself along with improvements to the G over the years.
2002 and up window regulaters must have co-inside with a period of erectile disfunction for him.

Calling this an offroad vehicle is an insult to a practical man,s intellegence.
It,s a bulevard cruiser some people will use to show off their easyly earned money.
VIAGRA is cheaper

I agree. I will wait a year or two for this one.

RE: 2019 G offroad

The aerodynamics appear to be greatly improved.  It wouldn't be hard to improve on the G in that area.

Overall, I'm sure it is a great highway vehicle.  As, I'm sure, the GL is too.

The new G reminds me of Hummer H2's -- a Yukon dressed up like an H1.

I think the new G is a GLS/S Class in a G Costume.

Thats pretty much what it is now. A lot of people with IFS vehicles try to act like IFS is close to SFA setups, but thats just plain crap and an attempt to make their cushy mall cruiser seem like a core offroad vehicle. Honestly the new Ford Bronco will probably be the better buy for a lot less money than the new G. They will probably look similar, be similar in size, and have an identical suspension setup and frame layout. This thing is one step closer to becoming a range rover, and look how laughable those things articulate offroad. Will the militaries be buying this new IFS platform , or will they be sticking with the SFA? My guess is they will obviously stick with the SFA for good reason.

Re: 2019 G offroad

I've always felt in the 463 w/ the 2001+ interior a little more width would be nice and the back seats in all 463s need more legroom. This solves both. Overall - I like it. Happy the G will still be around in any form. It could have been killed off many times in the last 10+ years. Wouldn't buy 1st year and may never buy w/ how much the price has increased - but maybe this will this cut the prices of the current model. Can't possibly think the chassis # will stay 463 seeing how MB usually changes chassis #s.
