I was able to unsnap and remove the headliner piece from the bottom of the moving sunroof. Now it will not close. It appears to be snagging on something (or perhaps the cable is binding somehow). I have removed the cover and tried to close it directly from the cable transmission with no luck. When the cable is applied forward, I can still wiggle the actual sunroof lid quite freely. It's not stuck on the rails itself. The only thing I can think of next is to remove the headliner (which I was not looking forward to) in order to find the snag. Does anyone have the steps to remove the headliner from the Pre-USA G-Wagons?

What a pain in the @$$! While pulled back all of the way, the cable seized in the tube. It took considerable force to push it back. While I have the headliner out, I'm going to have the fabric replaced. It should be inexpensive since I've already done all of the work and removed it.

Check owner's manual. The manual crank works if the motor or clutch have failed. If the cable sticks or the internal arms jam, then it cann't help.

After dropping the entire sunroof assembly, it took around 200lbs of force in order to move it forward again. The replacement cable made everything work like a charm again.
