Is it possible to replace the internal mechanism or mount with a second hand item without needing to replace the whole assembly which would require painting the external part of the mirror. And if so how do you pop out the glass on the mirror without breaking it to access the mounting mechanism.

The glass is also available as a separate part. https://www.oediscountparts.com/parts/index.cfm?searchText=463810008... https://www.oediscountparts.com/parts/index.cfm?make=Mercedes-Benz&y... This one is the aspherical heated glass for the driver's side. PM your email to me, and I'll send you the parts diagram. With a LOT of care, the glass can be removed from the fragile plastic tabs on the adjuster by using the heat from a hair dryer. Warm it up and pry it away VERY CAREFULLY. Some folks just glue the glass back in place.

Same for the drivers side headlight, the glass went missing somewhere along the line and just the reflector remains.
