Sunroof Stuck Open

I opened my sunroof all of the way to lubricate the rails and hinges. I was able to unsnap and remove the headliner piece from the bottom of the moving sunroof. Now it will not close. It appears to be snagging on something (or perhaps the cable is binding somehow). I have removed the cover and tried to close it directly from the cable transmission with no luck. When the cable is applied forward, I can still wiggle the actual sunroof lid quite freely. It's not stuck on the rails itself.

The only thing I can think of next is to remove the headliner (which I was not looking forward to) in order to find the snag.

Does anyone have the steps to remove the headliner from the Pre-USA G-Wagons?

Any ideas on what could be snagging or what I should check prior to removing the headliner?

RE: Sunroof Stuck Open

I removed the headliner and had to drop the entire sunroof assembly in order to FORCE the sunroof assembly back forward. What a pain in the @$$! While pulled back all of the way, the cable seized in the tube. It took considerable force to push it back.
I will be getting a new cable, the gear inside of the slide motor, and a new bolt that I stripped out.

While I have the headliner out, I'm going to have the fabric replaced. It should be inexpensive since I've already done all of the work and removed it.

Too bad you are not closer to me. I have a sun roof motor, cable and tube assembly and full pan from when I installed the Camptop.

Re: Sunroof Stuck Open

You can mechanically close sunroof by accessing compartment next to the rear cargo door and rotating assembly by hand. Check owner's manual.

The manual crank works if the motor or clutch have failed.  If the cable sticks or the internal arms jam, then it cann't help.

RE: Sunroof Stuck Open

The nylon / plastic sleeve material binded and expanded in the tube, thus making it near impossible to close again. After dropping the entire sunroof assembly, it took around 200lbs of force in order to move it forward again. The replacement cable made everything work like a charm again.

While I had the headliner down, I replaced the material with a darker graphite color.
