617A w. 300GD clutch - still learning after all these years

Hi folks! Haven’t posted in quite a while. The Gs are still in the family, just not my daily driver anymore. Had some trouble with the input shaft dragging on the big G, full disclosure, it’s been like this for a few ……. Years ….

But today was the day for the motor to come out for a good look. I thought maybe the pilot bearing was dragging like some years ago, but alas, no. Part of the spring retaining pieces on the friction disk had broken, become lodged, and we’re busy machining their way through the pressure plate. No worries, I have a spare motor with a clutch on it, I can swap that one in and replace it later since this car sees so few miles these days.

Strike two! The one on the spare motor was broken in the same way, just not as bad and hadn’t been that way very long. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that the clutch meant for the normally aspirated OM617 might not hold up to the torque of the 617A, but I am a little surprised it never came up before. Or maybe it has in my absence. I’ll search. I might have to reach out to Sachs to see if they have a disk of the same physical dimensions that might handle some more torque.

I have a disk for a 280GE. I wonder if that would hold up better. The pressure plate for that ont is very different from the 300GD one so I’m not sure about using the whole thing on the 300GD flywheel, but maybe???

Anyone have experience to share?

Truth be told each of these clutches probably have 150,000 miles apiece on them. Maybe I’m over-using them, but the friction surfaces are like new. I guess it’s the other parts that get more beat up by the torque.

All the best!

M110 clutch is a no all around. After a little research I decided to just re-order the standard parts from EI and remember to change the disk more often. Good chance to freshen the turbo drain seals too. Can’t wait to have her back in the pink.
