D.I.Y romantic tips for G-wagen owners

When your wife is mad at you for spending long cold winter nights outside with your G instead of inside with her and a glass of wine:

Make her a romantic diesel filter lamp!
Make sure you dont spill any diesel when changing filters, stick some organic fibre cloth in the hole, light it and bask in the glory of your wife's appraisal.
Also works if you just like to put things on fire.

Uh....that would not work for my "little woman". I would need something with the word "carat" after it.

Why do you think I spend so much time outside in long cold winter nights with my old diesel G? Low maintenance ;-)

Very funny Mr. T, my wife appreciated the humor as well and she knows what that filter is for. It is much more fun to be inside with her and a glass of wine.

Cheers,

Mr T, that's a nice one, I guess the idea comes from your country laws? Isn't that a law in Norway that you have to carry in your vehicle a blanket, candle etc in case you get stuck on the road in a snow storm? Her in SA we could use this idea as a mosquito repellent during our warm romantic summer evenings at a crocodile infested river bank in the middle of the bush!

Btw: am still waiting for the part# of the brake pads.......I guess here in Africa the smoke signals communication are a bit slow!

Re: D.I.Y romantic tips for G-wagen owners

There's no rules to carry a blanket or candle or any "romantic aides" in the car

A blanket is a good idea, so I usually carry one, but not for any "romantic" reasons. When it's -15C or colder and you have to stand still for some time (the engine runs, but the car is not moving), especially the back seat can get a little cold. Also, if you get involved in an accident either directly or arrive at the scene of one, the blanket can be useful for keeping warm injured people or people in chock. The one I have in the car, I bought for $10 at a bargain shop.

What is required by law (or will be from 1. march), however, is a reflective vest. I've carried one in my car since I got it. Also, a warning triangle is required by law, and has been for a long time.

Usual extras that I carry around almost all the time:
Blanket, flashlight, collapsible spade, towing rope, cargo straps, a couple of litres of oil, some coolant, glass wipes, a spare fan belt, tools and fire extinguisher.

Most of the stuff is kept in a plastic box in the rear, wedged in place by the subwoofer.

I plan on making a couple of plywood containers atop the rear wheelarches for keeping the stuff in, and cover them in gray felt. I also think I need to refresh the contents of the first aid kit...

RE: D.I.Y romantic tips for G-wagen owners

OK.  Here's my luck

I would make one, light it and then the cat would cruise by catching its tail on fire thereby sprinting about the house incinerating everything in its wake torching the furniture, drapery and lampshades eventually colminating in a house burned to the ground.  Thereafter I will spend the next few months sleeping in my Gwagen with my pissed off wife and burned cat.

I think I'll come in out of the cold now...

Re: D.I.Y romantic tips for G-wagen owners

Well done Johan,

You're a very conscious driver, if ever I get stranded in the arctic I hope to find you to rescue me

I was referring to an article on Discovery, not long ago, that showed a woman and child that survived in their stranded car a two day snow storm in a remote area up in the north. They where mentioning that thanks to the legal requirement to carry a blanked, a candle etc they were able to survive the ordeal.

I guess it is a simple life saving-equipment, but some times documentaries are some how exaggerated
