Lost HP found

I found what feels like 10hp that I didn't know I had...when I cut off and temporarily bypassed my blocked up cat.

How do you "temporary" bypass it?
I am curious, when you bypass your cat, do you get any additional smoke out of the pipe?

I found some lost HP once. I had taken out my floor mat for cleaning and when I put it back in part of it went under the pedal. The little pastic stop on the floor was covered with the thickness of the mat and so the pedal no longer went as far dow as it should.

Cut it out and weld in a piece of pipe, it's only short term temporary though because I plan to re-route and replace most of my exhaust system. The front muffler had been removed and replaced with a cat which hung directly under my t-case; another reason for removing it. When I redo the pipe I will install a new cat with bolt up flanges so it can be removed and installed easily between smog tests. I havn't noticed any smoke but I'm sure the exhaust flow has increased so the mixture may have to be adjusted a bit.

Has anyone here removed the CAT on the newer engines with all of the computers?

Don't know on Gs, but on Range Rovers (Bosch injection), there is a resistor shunt outside the EC box. The brain box "knows" if a cat is fitted or not according to the value of the resistor.

So if you remove the cat - which I did - you just have to change the resistor, and remove the Lambda sensors.

If you don't, you have poor fuel efficiency due to the messed-up mixture.

I have K-jet...no lambda sensors.....no problem; thanks anyway

Bern, I found some horsepower today...it is called "sea-level". Drove down to California from the 4500 ft elevation where I live in Nevada....once I got to 96 feet I felt like passing other cars just "because".

On a funny note, you know you are going slow when the truck in front of you kicks up a rock that hits your windscreen (does not crack it) and the rock happily lands on your hood and stays there for a mile or so due to the great aerodynamics of the G.

I'm lucky....my house is at sea level, sometimes even below depending on the tide, so I can experience the full power of the 280 engine in my hometown.

I personally don't let cats anywhere near my G, especially a "blocked up" one. That could be really icky.
