one of the biggest problems is the "human factor", especially the folks at the Cal DMV... 10 different clerks might give you 10 different answers or requirements... my 79 G has a later model diesel engine which was converted from gas. The G was imported from Germany within the past few years. It has valid CA registration but the guy I bought it from told me he had to deal with it for months including having the truck impounded before he could get it registered. I also had a helluva time getting my CDI registered... finally found a decent and helpful clerk at the DMV, worked exclusively with her and finally got it handled but only after months of back and forth and 3 tickets. It's definitely possible as all of us CA G owners can attest but it takes lots of perseverence and it little luck. |

I'll soon be driving the G back to LA to have it inspected/tested at one of the state approved shops. Some modifications will probably have to be done to meet the health and safety code standards but once it is certified I should be able to register the ol' Girl. I hate to have to take it to LA but the only state approved shop in Nor-Cal doesnt deal with diesels. |
