Good 460s

Greetings

As some of you may know I'm thinking of maybe selling my 280GE. One thing that is making me think twice is the apparent lack of really good 460s out there.
You see I thought if I sell it I could easily get another at a later date, but it would appear that a lot of the old girls suffer from rust.
My 280GE is rust free and very tidy, so I just might end up keeping it.

So what I'm really asking, is there a lack of good 460s or are they easy to come by?

Rust seems to be a big problem in any of the older ones that have spent time in Europe where lots of salt is used on the roads in the winters. Some of that is also due to the fact that the older G's (460's) did not have as good of preventative engineering implementation against rust.

If I had a good clean and rust free one, and was planning to have one in the future, I'd keep the known quantity one I had.

If I had a good clean and rust free one, and was planning to have one in the future, I'd keep the known quantity one I had.


That's becoming my thinking. I think I'll ditch the 463 SWB G300 and keep the two LWB ones for now. Besides my 460 is running so well, and it has really good shocks and I have just had the most amazing brake pads fitted. And I mean amazing! My 460 will pull up faster than either of my 463s (tyres aside as it is running MTs and they howl when you lock them up on the dry road ha ha ha). I'm going to get a set of these brake pads for my LWB 463. They are custom made here in New Zealand for race or street cars and work really well at stopping 2500kgs and another 1800kgs of boat

Sean,

Could you elaborate on the custom made brake pads / shoes for your 460? Lots of us who drive 460's daily sure could benefit from better brake technology.

Anybody else care to chime in with their experiences with stopping power for the 460"s?

sounds like just what we all need(460 owners)



ps....i have also long been on this topic about "mint" 460's,they are getting rarer and so dearer.( i love both my 460's,all i need now is a nice swb hardtop and thats me done!)

Plus there is something special about the basic 460. The 463 is nice, and I do love driving it, but the 460 is special. Except for those stupid factory brakes! They are terrible when you try to stop in a hurry.
There's a company here in New Zealand that specialises in performance brakes. I sent them up a set of pads (front and rear) from a 460 and they replace the standard compound with a high performance one. It totally transformed my 280 - and I mean totally. It is like a different vehicle with those brake pads in. They are also perfect for off-road as they give you a way better feel and they work full on from stone cold.
I'm up in Auckland later this week so I'll pop on in and ask then about shipping overseas. I'm sure it wont be a problem. They can turn the job around in 3 days! So I guess it's just a case of you sending them some brake pads (old ones are fine as long as the baking plates are all okay) and paying by credit card.
They are a great bunch of guys. So I'll report back here next week and tell you what they have to say. I'd say it would be a big fat yes sir

I've always been surprised that everyone complains about 460 brakes. Mine have worked very well up until now. I just had my rotors machined, new pads and rebuilt calipers and now they don't work as well as before. Maybe letting you pads and rotors rust to s@$% and having a few seized pistons is the way to go. I don't know!

Someone here in SA had some vented rotors / discs made - there are photos on gwagenclub.co.za - go to "gallery" which apparently also are an imrovement.

Re your 460 posting - if you have a clean RHD 460 with the space to keep it, then surely you will? Here in SA the RHD's are of indifferent condition, rarely 5 door and demand a premium.

Long time and no compromise. They are great. I've had them on other vehicles and they have lasted a long time.

As for the 460, yes it is a good one but I'm either selling that or my 463 G300 SWB. But the more I think about it the more I think I'll keep the 280GE.
That will give me a 300GE and a 280GE.
