ml430 more than ml 55 or 500

Why is it you see these racers that place in the competitions ussualy use ML 430s opposed to the ML 55 AMGs and ML 500s?

RE: ml430 more than ml 55 or 500

I'd guess it's because the ML55 suspension is not so good off-road, and the ML500 is much heavier.

Maybe the ML55 is too sporty for the offroading tasks.

Rudeny saud not so good off-road. It's lower than both the 500 and 430 and it certainly looks heavier than the 430. Also, the exhaust system layout may have something to do with it, I don't know.

Not enough cargo room in the ML55 with the spare tire holder inside?

Stiffer and allows less suspension travel. The later years 02+ are also plagued by this stiffer suspension to accommodate the weight that was added in the face lift. If I remember right the 0-60 time between my 00 and 02 ML320 is almost 1 second slower for the 02, thinking back to my 2000 ML and now with my 02 the 02 is a lot heavier and you can feel that both on and off road and more sluggish around the bends.

Yes, that's it.  The suspension is lowered about an inch and uses stiffer springs and large sway bars.  It's great for street driving, but not so great off-road.

It's crazy how much difference 200lbs can make. I would think it's not much on an already heavy +4500lbs car. I always thought ml's are alot heavier than other suv's, but pathfinders and 4runners weigh just as much. I'm guessing the 17 inch wheels slow it down quite a bit. Unsprung weight kills.
