Posts: 2230 | oily deposit around the sparks. hi guys,i have just recieved a set of ngk iridium spark plugs,a new set of leads,a distributor cap and rotor arm. why? cos i have noticed the power drop when running on lpg and the vehicle started to stutter on take off. after looking into the matter i was told by shakir who also runs on lpg that the leads are prone to damage and the sparks fitted to the 110 motor are not the best for lpg.anyhow i checked the leads one evening when the engine was running and saw small sparks coming off the 3'rd lead! at least i will have a piece of imnd when the electrical parts are renewed,as i guess 18 years of use does take its toll... now back to the topic heading: i was looking over the engine at the leads and sparks to see how easy they come off and noticed an oily wetness around the sparks.what could have caused it rgds hus | ||

On the 110 engine as you will already have noticed the spark plugs are recessed deeply in to the head. The cam cover gasket (plastic) is actually above the spark plugs. Any oil leakage past this seal will naturally collect in the spark plug recess. Clean it out before you change the plugs! | ||

Maybe an idea I guess they will have hardened with age. There's actully 6 of them. Be extra careful when changing the plug nearest the bulkhead, it's not easy to get at (I'm 6'+ and I struggle to get at it. the best way is to climb up on top of the engine!) if you get it wrong as the previous owner of mine did its tricky, if not impossible without taking the head off, to fix the damaged thread. You can get a a get a set of gaskets from Eurocarparts for a reasonable amount - maybe also German and Swedish (there are more of them about) just get a generic set for the 110 engine. If its leaking you could just try and tighten it up a bit. If you taking it off then could be a good idea to check the valve clearance. Just be very careful when tightening anything going into aluminum - its all to easy to cross thread and strip threads. - that rear plug is a pain to get at and can be easy to cross thread! | ||

When topping up oil some gets spilled some time it will run over a hot engine quickly and into the recesses, most will evoporate or burn off but you may get a little residue, before you attempt the plug change I will post a photo of that rear plug on a engine that is out so you can see the difficulty, here is a little tip,before removing old plugs use air gun and brake cleaner to clean all the crap out of recesses, wear saftey glasses when doing this. when fitting a plug turn anti clock wise until you feel it click over the start of the thread , then turm it slowly clockwise and you should avoid cross dressing. apply ample copper slip to thread first ensure you do not contaminate spark surface. remember sequence of leads if you dont you will find each one numbered in tiny digits on the cap. good luck Huss | ||

Roughneck, you seem to be well versed with the m110. I just had a new head installed and oil seeps out the area by the back sparkplug. Is this a common issue ? My mechanic did not use any silicone or sealant on the gasket and I am wondering if maybe he should. Suggestions ? I hate leaks. Posts: 2230 | RE: oily deposit around the sparks. changed the leads and sparks(NGK IRIDIUMS) yesterday and took the G for a run lastnight.the hesitant pull off at the lights and lack of aceleration on kick down have gone infact the the response of the rev counter when hitting the pedal in neutral is unreal the difference in performance of petrol and lpg was very obvious before but now the difference is almost zero. i have an airport run tomorrow and will really see the improvement. | ||

First you need to be sure where the leak is coming from, is it the top cover or is it the cam box or even those two little cam end caps. The most frequent cause of a leak back there is uneven tightening of the cover plate and as the gasket is rubber overtightening causing a split, a leak from the cam box can be for the same reasons, from the end caps is difficult to cure in situ, the m110 is normaly a leak free engine and one of my favourite petrol lumps. | ||
