Need advice on closing the deal on a 2007 GL450

Hi, Guys--I ordered a GL450 a few months back. The vehicle should be arriving the end of next week. The dealership is pushing for me to pick 'er up before 7/2, but I am suspecting that is because: 1) They want it counted for June sales numbers, 2) Better incentives will be offered soon for 4th of July and they want me out the door before then, or 3) Both of the above.

The sticker price has already been negotiated. The remaining issues are trade-in, incentives and decision to buy the extended warranty.

QUESTIONS:
1. Any idea what the new incentive will be for a 2007 GL and when it would start? (The current incentive on a 2007 GL is 6.9% financing.)

2. Any advice on the extended warranty? Anyone out there buy it with his/her GL? Is there room to negotiate on the extended warranty price?

3. What difference--aside from aesthetics--do larger wheels make on the GL? (Better ride? Better handling?)

Any advice out there would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
DrZ'sM

Lets take this from the top. If you have ordered one because what you wanted wasn't available and already negotiated the purchase price, you're pretty much set-up on paying what you agreed, incentives or not. Talking also that 7-2 is a Monday, it is quite obvious that they want those June sales numbers. I bet the salesman that sold it to you is short for commission that month and your vehicle will put him over the top. THAT may be a negotiating point for your trade in, if that's the case.

The 6.9% financing can be beat by almost ANY credit union. I believe I'm also correct that extended warranties can be purchased any time while your vehicle is still under factory warranty. I wish I could advise you further but that's all I can tell you.

Welcome to P3 and I hope you enjoy the use of this forum. As you can tell, it's sorta new and we're working on building it. Stick around and post about your GL, especially pics when you get it. I'd like to have one but it'll have to wait until my funds are replenished.

Larger wheels generally means less sidewall which equates to better handling. With larger wheels, ride quality will almost always be worse because there isn't as much tire to absorb the bumps anymore.

Thanks, Guys--I appreciate the info from both posts.

The way the "ordering" process was explained to me, the price of the vehicle was negotiated at the time of order; however, they could not give me the incentive financing rate in March (because I wasn't physically buying the GL then). Therefore, whatever incentive occurred in whatever month I actually took possession of the vehicle would dictate my final package.

I'll report back on how things go!

Thanks again,
Dr.Z'sM

I picked mine up today...same June push..my GL 320 CDI came in two weeks early...the sales guys are all on monthly commission plans that take into account the number of units they sell in that month and the avg margin on those deals.

I know the sales guy pretty well from golf and he admitted that closing the exact same deal earns him an extra $750 if closed in June vs July 1 so don't sweat it.

You can get 6.15% financing on eLoan for 60 months...the dealer should match that if you push them a bit..I thought th GL special financing was at 5.99%.

Good luck.

BTW guys.. in addition to better handling and worse ride quality, larger wheels and the lower-profile tires that go with them carry an increased risk of damage to both tire and wheel from road hazards.  As "Animals" explained, less sidewall & tire mass equals less tire to absorb impacts.  One might say that they are particularly inappropriate on an SUV, but it must also be admitted that most SUVs don't really go off-road...

Welcome to the site and congrats on your new GLs.  They are superb vehicles, no doubt about that

Add to above, poorer traction in wet conditions, i.e. aquaplaning.  Fewer PSI on the road with wider tires.

Also add to that a fuel economy hit as you have to move the heavier tires.

Re: Need advice on closing the deal on a 2007 GL450

Hi, All...I wanted to send a quick note of thanks to everyone who took time to post a reply, and to share the conclusion of my car buying experience. I picked-up my new GL450 this past weekend and the transaction couldn't have been smoother.

I had ordered the vehicle in mid-March. (Obsidian/Ash, metallic, P1 and sunroof packages, running boards, rearview camera--I know I'm missing something...) The price was negotiated at the time of the order, so the only things left to do this past weekend were finalize my trade and the financing.

I recognize that I am biased, but the trade offer that MB made me was ridiculously low. ($2500 for a loaded 2001 Infiniti I30 in great condition; Retail is $11K. I unloaded it privately for $6K.) And before anyone chimes in, yes, I do understand that most MB dealerships can't sell an Infiniti on their lot easily or at all--it would have to go to auction and isn't worth anything to them anyway, etc. I told you that I was biased, didn't I?

There were no incentives/financing deals available on the GL this month. I have tier one credit and was told the best Mercedes could do was 7.84% for 60 months. When I told them that I had an offer from my credit union in hand for 6.75% financing and that eLoan was at 5.99% (thanks, Adamb for the suggestion--I checked eLoan the night before I went to the dealership). MB quickly came up with a 6.39% deal for me...Better than 7.84% I suppose, but not as good as the 1.9% financing that I got on my Audi A6. (Highly recommend Audi and the A6, by the way...It's a BEAST in the snow.)

All in all, I drove off a happy customer. The GL looks great and handles nimbly for vehicle its size. I can't wait to take 'er tailgating to Penn State football games this year.

Again, thanks to all for the advice. I hope I can return the favor in the future.

Geesh! I'm not THAT tech savvy! I'll give it a try this weekend, but no promises!

(Looks like I have to wash the GL now, too.)

For members of MBCA who have been members for at least 1 year, there is an additional $2,500 rebate from Mercedes-Benz USA. This has been extended through 2008. Details at mbca.org.
