Below are the results with the limits limits in ( ). HC 1.92 gpm (.80 gpm) CO 47.91 gpm (15 gpm) NOx 8.14 gpm (2 gpm) Does anyone know what these denote? I believe the last is the oxygen level. Some states it is a pretty low $ amount. Most of these issues are related to the Catalytic converter (or lack thereof) or other smog controls on the car. | ||

Removal of the cat enables it to breath better and produces a bit more power. You might want to take it to a friendly MB mechanic and get them to set the CO level where it's supposed to be. Done with a simple set screw on the Bosch fuel distributor. Also, check the timing to be sure it's where it's supposed to be. I used to be able to pass the Georgia annual emissions inspection with these two numbers being set correctly. If those two numbers are right and you still fail the inspection, there are bigger problems in your engine. It looks like it's burning too rich. | ||

But have no idea what is in it. In Florida, we no longer have the inspections. So I do not worry about it... When we did have inspections, all of my vehicles were diesel, so I was exempt anyways. | ||

I just purchased an '86 280GE and, in Georgia (actually in the Atlanta Metro area) once the clean air folks determined that my G was Federalized properly they gave me a letter, which permits me to have the G's emissions not exceed the levels required by the EPA when it was imported (in '86 or '87). The EPA's emissions standards in the 80s was pretty lax by today's standards. I'm pretty sure that our regs are based on a model that the EPA "suggests" to states - certainly ignored in California - so it's it may be similar in other states, including yours. My catalytic converters were also removed; no one particularly noticed and it didn't make a difference in my emissions tests. So, it passed. | ||

The CA regs only require the vehicle to meet the federal emissions requirements applicable at manufacture date. That is the whole point of Federalization. My defense that the truck "passed" did no good! I see now that Pefromance Products has a restricitor plate available that might have worked, but at the time I bought one from Europa. | ||

Absolutely right, you have to start with a very fine tune up - as Dutch says, perfect ignition timing, replace the spark plugs - adjust the spark gap on all to specs, check the distributor finger & cap & spark plug wires, adjust valve clearance, adjust mixture with CO tester - hydrocarbon level is un-burned fuel in the exhaust, it will drop with a good running engine/perfect tune up. I have removed my original cat to get rid of the heat, but will install two aftermarket ones ( cost ~$400). The cat will only work/last if the car has an emission control system with an oxygen sensor installed, otherwise it burns out/fails very fast. Karl | ||

Disco 2 Posts: 4398 | RE: NY state emissions inspection: FAILED In my opinion if the vehicle is given a thoughro service, air filter change spark plugs leads timing fuel air mixture oil change etc etc. then add about 3% Isoproponal Alchol (IPA) to the fuel you should meet those standards, the only problem is you might like the increase in power with IPA in the fuel, and not want to revert. | ||
