Did the EDU reset....

Did the ECU reset on the ML this afternoon....mommy said it responds a lot better. We'll have to see about the gas mileage.

RE: Did the EDU reset....

How was it done? By dealer or by an OBD Tool? Thanks.

It essentially makes the adaptive transmission "relearn" your driving style. A lot of people on other forums do this every month to get the "oomph" back in acceleration. Some say they've gotten better gas mileage, however I have yet to see any proof of this.

  1. Turn the key to the ON position, but do not start the car.
  2. Press the accelerator pedal all the way down to the kickdown switch.
  3. Hold it down there for approximately 10-15 seconds.
  4. Turn the key to the OFF position, but do not take the key out.
  5. After approximately 2-3 minutes you can take the key out.
That's about all there is to it!!

If you drive like a granny, it'll eventually adapt back to granny mode. Does the driver come with a reset button? I'm not sure about better mileage, extra 50 horsepowers and such miracles.

When do you take your foot off the pedal? And how do you know it is reset?

Some say take the foot off after the 10-15 seconds, before going to Step 4. Some say take the foot off after you take out the key. I think it works either way.

There really is no indication that it's reset, except that it should be more responsive...if you don't already have a lead foot.

No mileage thingy in our ML.........and I'm a little lazy on resetting the trip odo, then doing the math, that and my parents don't always fill up at the same time...and I'd have a hard time convincing them to let the tank run down to the reserve so I can calculate. I also forgot to record mileage BEFORE the reset.

I don't think that's how the adaptive tranny works - i.e., it doesn't store driving style. I will have to check with MBUSA (Wolfgang, Pleubner kick in any time!!!), but I believe it adapts in "real time". It will learn your driving style over a certain reasonably epected interval but will not retain driving style in memory indefinitely. That way, if grandma takes the truck after the leadfoot had driven it, the truck will still feel comfortable to grandma, probably only if grandma took the truck several hours or days after leadfoot dropped it off!!! I will check this and report.

RE: Did the EDU reset....

I don't remember the exact number, but it takes about 15-20 shifts to adapt. So it stores info on last 20 or so shifts. What I meant was, if you usually drive slow, even if you reset the ecu, the tranny will eventually adapt to shifting slow...

I've found the transmissions adapts to Leadfoot driving very quickly and is reluctant to revert to Granny mode; the way I force a reversion to Granny mode is by putting it into cruise control on level ground at any speed below 70mph for a few moments, this seems to persuade the transmission to change to Granny mode, you can watch the fuel consumption drop quite markedly over a minute or so (after a trip computer reset).

The main transmission ECU (in the title it says EDU - is this a mistake? or what does it stand for?) reset is rarely necessary, it became necessary for me as the transmission lost its settings when the battery failed, otherwise I just use the 'cruise control reset' if I get on a highway instead of UK country roads.
