ECU reset....ramblings....

I had to use the kickdown swtich several times yesterday and last night getting on the highways and merging. The last time I did the reset, I didn't get to drive it, so it learned my moms rather lethargic driving habits. Hit the pedal down all the way, not yet to kickdown, almost nothing, hit it to kickdown....1 potato...2...wham!! So much lag because of my mom. What's interesting is that, there was a BMW X5 3.0 in front of me on the on-ramp. It looked like he was doing at least 3/4 throttle, and I passed him right after we got on the highway.

So we go eat dinner, I quickly run out to do the reset. Get on the highway, try it again, much better!!!!!!!!!!! I love it, but I miss the old feeling in the gut during hard acceleration. I know I can't expect much from a 5,000 lb SUV with a V6.

I think I know why people have claimed better gas mileage after doing the reset. What I have noticed the past two weeks, is that after a while of normal day-to-day driving, the throttle response is slower, so we tend to press the pedal a little more, which gives it a more aggressive start than normal. After we do the reset, it's mpre responsive, so we don't have to press the pedal that much further to get it going. Smoother starts...

Asian you should honestly start recording milage w/o reset for a week and reset everyother day or whatever you do. So we can see some sort of data from this.

You are obsessed with doing rests, just learn how to use the tiptronic and problems solved.

I’m not sure of the 0-60 comparison of the X5 3.0 to the W163 ML350, but I can say the X5 3.0 did not feel as peppy as my ML320 when I took a demo ride in it.  In fact, the X5 4.4 did not feel very peppy either.  That’s one reason I ended up with the X3.  While it might be slower then the X5 4.4, it doesn’t feel like it.

All that weight I'm guessing...?

The X5 3.0i is about 1-2 seconds faster from 0-60 than the ML320. About 7.3 seconds or something like that. Not sure about the 1/4 mile on both.

1) Turn key to 2nd/ON position. Press down gas pedal all the way for at least 10-15 seconds.

2) Release gas pedal. Turn key to OFF position, but leave the key in. Wait a few minutes.

3) Take key out.

In ECU resetting, do you have to do that everytime you start the ML. Do you think no harm or light up something on the dash?

I don't do it every time. But eventually it will "learn" your driving habits, so I do it once in a while.

You bring up a good thing about doing harm....I might put it off for a while and live with the "lag" until I start hearing long-term reports.

Yeah, it should work!! Unless they changed something afterward. Try it out and tell us what the butt-dyno says.

Found out about it on another forum, then after testing it with the butt dyno, I was hooked. Whenever anyone mentions poor throttle response....DING! I give them these instructions.

Still a little weary about the long term effects as a member pointed out a while ago.

I was wondering what a "butt dyno" was, then I found out that you can buy them online. Check out their other products.

Oh my. Didn't think those actually existed. When i said butt dyno, I was referring specifically to my butt.

Did you have a look at that link? They have some interesting products, including a flux capacitor that can be retrofitted to makes other than a DeLorean.
